My
paintings are completely my own feeling and expression.
When I paint, I don't even think of conveying something
to others. A friend once told me that the women's shoes
and dresses in my work are like my "privately collection".
Paintings, originally starts with nothing, so maybe
it's somewhat true. Actually, I find patterns I like
from books about the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and I
combine them with aspects of landscapes, photos of classical
Chinese clothing and images in magazines. Then, by using
the same classical brush, the same traditional paper
and the same kind of paint and techniques, I create
lines and romance and fill them with colours. All these
different "subjects" and "patterns"
are actually the same thing to me: "ready production".
I only choose what I paint, and I don't worry much about
how to paint.
In
ancient China, women's feet were always considered as
one of the most private parts of the body, and it was
forbidden to show them. Men considered women's feet
to be very alluring and erotic. So shoes have always
had a connection with sex. However, when I began painting
shoes, I didn't think of sex. I think it is very natural
for a girl like me to want to paint shoes. And I don't
consider my artworks to be fashion designs. What I paint
are items from the past - lost and beautiful things.
My method of painting is also a traditional Chinese
way. Since old, classical things have never been painted
in this way before, the artworks may look a bit like
fashion.
